TAIPEI

We travelled to Taipei a few times and stayed for around 2 month. Our main purpose was not traveling, but studying Kung Fu with the Master and teaching students at the Fu Jen University. Although we practiced every day, doesn’t mean we always stayed at the Dojo. Our home was on the countryside, but we spent a lot of the time going around in Taipei and suddenly the Master thought, we could use some training. Those situations were mostly when we visited a temple, or came across a park or garden. We also were often invited to drink tea with friends of the Master and had to show them some Kung Fu out of nowhere. And there were the regular training sessions every Saturday at the temple, were elderly women were dancing. Asian people live a very healthy lifestyle and it’s not uncommon to see them swinging their arms forth and backwards while just standing there. It might look strange, but they are very active people and know how to take care of the body. I mean, when I look at our Master he seems ageless. When he performs, especially a sword form, he jumps from one corner of the room to another before I even realize it.

Anyways, we came around a lot and saw some spots away from the typical tourist traffic, because we were with locals. That’s why I’ve listed some things you really can’t miss while you’re in Taipei.

HOW TO GET AROUND

The MRT system in Taipei is super convenient and it's pretty simple to use as well. Just follow the colors of the line you're supposed to take. The stations are all translated in English. I'd recommend you to buy a EASYCARD, which can be used for the MRT, Bus and Bicycle Rental systems. You can also pay with it in the convenience stores. It's really convenient if you don't have a REVOLUT Card. For those amongst you who travel a lot, I really recommend you to get a REVOLUT Card.

CHIANG KAI-SHEK MEMORIAL

(國立中正紀念堂)

If you’re interested in history, I really recommend to visit the CHIANG KAI-SHEK MEMORIAL (國立中正紀念堂) and Museum. There are also GUARDS, just like those in London, but when they change shift, they actually walk like – 1 step, other foot on the same line, 1 step, other foot on the same line and so on. It’s somewhat amusing, because they walk like this in the elevator and ride down to the next floor, to continue their walk. I was wondering if they kept their grim faces in the elevator too.

SHILIN NIGHT MARKET (士林夜市)

Another thing you can’t miss is the SHILIN NIGHT MARKET (士林夜市). You can get the famous OYSTER OMLET, FRIED ICE CREAM there just like countless other delicious food. We even came across some weird things, like the Penis Shaped Waffles.

TAMSUI (淡水區)

A Trip to TAMSUI (淡水區) is an absolute must. It’s about 40’ by MRT, the metro in Taipei and a perfect day trip destination. It’s a smaller city located directly at the shore, there are all kinds of restaurants, shops, street performers, hawker stalls and a lot of other things. You can walk along the shore and return through the little street between the stores.

SHOPPING

Shop at the EAST METRO MALL or in the underground of TAIPEI STATION and walk around the Main Station afterwards. Another fascinating and young shopping district is XIMENDING, with cool buildings or NANXI, with a lot of designer boutiques.

BEITOU (北投區)

Also plan a trip to BEITOU (北投區) and soak in the famous HOT SPRING. We were in many different Hot Springs another great one is in WULAI (烏來). They are really relaxing and most of the time we ate dinner in the restaurant next to it.

KEELUNG MOUNTAIN (雞籠山)

An hours bus ride outside the city is the stunning MOUNT KEELUNG. It is possible to drive almost to the top and hike on the different trails.

ELEPHANT MOUNTAIN (象山)

Another amazing experience was on top of the ELEPHANT MOUNTAIN (象山) with a perfect view on Taipei City. Usually we trained at the FUYANG ECO PARK (富陽自然生態公園) at night and walked around the FUZHOUSHAN PARK (福州山公園) with all its paths.

TEMPLES

There are many different Temples, but we always practiced at the CONFUCIUS TEMPLE (臺北市孔廟). There were also guided tours for visitors.

LONGTAN (龍潭區)

Visit LONGTAN (龍潭區)! Where you can find a beautiful lake, walk around and discover the temple in the middle. We also got a foot massage there, which was rather painful >.< and then we bought some traditional Sesame Seed Candy. In Longtan is also a market and an all you can eat Sushi where we went and piled the plates.

TEA TRADITION

If you get the chance, visit a traditional Tea House. We were invited to many different ones, but there's also a wide variety of tea houses in the MAOKONG AREA (貓空纜車) you can reach it by taking the Gondola or drive. It's a known scenic hotspot. The Gondola entry is at the MRT Taipei Zoo Station.

COFFEE

If you are more the Coffee Drinking Type, don't miss out on the various Cafes in Taipei. There are different theme Cafes typical for Asia, but also some really amazing Cafes were they actually brew the Cafe without a machine. For example at the ZHANLU COFFEE SHOP (湛盧咖啡) the barista will take extra time for you, describing different beans and makes individual recommendations. Pretty amazing - my friends said so, because I don't really like this roasted beverage.
