Over the last few years Bali has become a popular travel destination for many tourists all around the world. I cannot say that it really did good for the small Island. When I arrived, I stayed a few days in Kuta and had already feared that Bali had lost its magic. Kuta, Canggu and Seminyak are very touristic areas with a lot of resorts and so most of the locals job is to profit from the tourism. Everyone will offer you a ride by asking you “Taxi? Taxi?”, and sometimes they are very cunning, trying to overcharge you every time. Don’t go unprepared otherwise you will spend much more money, than you actually have calculated. For example, a Taxi ride to Kuta is never more than 90'000 RUPEES and to Ubud it’s around 300'000. Don’t show them you are the first time in Bali and always, really always bargain, especially at the market. They demand 3x the real prize. If you are not good in barging or, just like me, sometimes not in the mood, there are several stores that are around the same prices as the market and the ware is labeled, no barging just peaceful shopping.

I don’t want to lower your expectations, just know that Bali has become a really well-known travel destination for people around the world and it has tourists almost all around the year. Despite that, I truly think you should explore the Island and also the ones close by.

(if you like to travel to “unknown” destinations, check out my list)

HIKING

The sunrise trekking to MOUNT BATUR has become really famous over the years and you can't expect to be alone while hiking up. Still the view from the top is amazing and you won't regret the hike. There are plenty of tours starting from 50$, I recommend you to book one of those.

JATILUWIH RICE TERRACES

Get to know a local and let him take you to hidden places around Ubud. That’s how I ended up seeing a waterfall in the middle of the jungle, where I could have taken a bath totally naked, because there was no one around.

INSTAGRAM SPOTS

A popular Instagram spot is the TEGALLALANG RICE TERRACE. I usually don’t like crowded places, but I guess it’s a must-see spot in Bali and it is really magical!

UBUD

I love monkeys, so I wanted to see the MONKEY FOREST and I was not disappointed. You can spend your day in Ubud, stroll around and explore the area, stop at the giant MARKET and when the sun gets low take a stroll along the CAMPUHAN RIDGE WALK, which will lead you to a beautiful and a little bit hidden spot ;-) It’s a 30’ plus walk from the begin and I recommend you to go early in the morning or when the sun is low, because it’s getting reeeeally hot there! Catch a traditional BALINESE DANCE SHOW in the evening at the UBUD PALACE.

AMED

If you are driving from Ubud to Amed, you have a stop at the BLUE LAGOON and, this is an absolute must, at the VIRGIN BEACH. This beach is a little bit hidden, so there are almost no people in this bay. There are nice waves to play, and a little Island in swimming distance. The sand is white and the water clear, truly one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve seen in Bali.

Once you have arrived in Amed, you will find another touristic hotspot. Just let the driver take you to the Sunset point, where you can catch an amazing sunset with an ice-cold beer in your hand. In the bay below you can rent SNORKELING stuff and spend some amazing hours, exploring the undersea world.

DENPASAR; KUTA, CANGGU, SEMINYAK

To be frank; I almost thought Bali has lost it’s magic during the first four days of my stay, which I spent in the most touristic area of Bali.

Watch the Sunset at DOUBLE SIX or LEGIAN BEACH. You can even rent a surfboard for a day and enjoy the sunset on your board, while tangling your feet in the water. I have to say, I was a little disappointed of the surfing there, because the waves broke strangely and sometimes you couldn’t surf at all. For beginners on the other hand, it’s a perfect place to start riding the waves.

PARTYING

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY in one of the beach resorts in the Canggu area after a lazy day at the beach.

FREE TATTOO

Go SHOPPING at BEACH WALK and catch the waiter dancing show at 50's styled Johnny Rockets Burger Restaurant. It’s nice to stroll around a air-conditioned Mall, when the heat is getting a little nasty.

Maybe a little bit crazy for some of you, but get a FREE TATTOO DEUS EX MACHINA. This is also no longer a secret, so show up early enough to sign up in the list. You can only get a free Tattoo if you buy something on the Menu, but it’s still amazingly cheap. Go ahead and get a special souvenir from Bali!

ULUWATU TEMPLE with the traditional KECAK FIRE DANCE

There are different ways to get to the temple, one is by tourist bus, another one by taxi and one is by guided tour, which includes the tickets as well. If you go there alone you can buy tickets at the amphitheatres ticket booth in front of it. Tickets for walk-ins range between IDR 70,000 and 100,000 depending on low and peak season. The sunset around 18:00 and that's when the Kecak Fire Dance show begins.
