Hi!

I'm Mara, thanks for visiting my blog! I will be traveling around the world for the next years and explore amazing places in different countries! I am always seeking Adventures, Good Food, Martial Arts Experiences, Unique and sometimes Weird Stuff. \(^o^)/

ATHENS

Since I love Mythology I always wanted to experience ancient places with a lot of history. My first stop on what should be a World Trip, started off in Athens. Maybe because my expectations were too high...I have to admit, that I was rather disappointed from the city of founder-hero Theseus. The city center itself seemed somewhat dirty and when I reached the ancient Agora part, I was shocked of the destroyed, once so pretty, buildings. The walls were over and over scrawled with Graffiti. Besides that the points of interests are well protected and also in good condition. Getting around in Athens won’t take you longer then a couple days and I actually would recommend you Athens as a Shopping City, because there are countless shops in the Monastiraki Quarter.

I really can only advise you to include at least one of the Greek Islands on your Trip - there you will surely find some magic!

The language could become a problem. I had no chance of reading the Bus Map, just like other signs and writing, which are mostly in Greek. For the short stay I couldn’t really figure the words out. So when I used the bus, I checked our location on Google Maps and when I was close to where I wanted to go, I just get off the bus. There would probably have been a closer bus stop, but a little walking never killed nobody ;-)

The Greek people are a delight! I expected the language to be kinda similar to Italian, but it actually sounded more like Czech. First I was confused, whenever they said “Kaliemera” until I found out that this was their greeting. When I used it in a restaurant the waiter laughed at me and explained, that it means “Good Morning” and it was evening, when I visited the venue.

Some words for you to know, I wish I had known ;-)

Καλημέρα – Kalimera – Good Morning

Καλησπέρα – Kalispera – Good Afternoon / Evening

Ευχαριστώ – Efcharistó –Thank you

Γειά σου – Yah-Soo – Hi or Bye informal

Ναί – Ne – Yes

όχι – Ohi – No

Συγνώμη – Synchoreíte – Excuse me

πόσο κοστίζει – póso kostízei – How much is it?

Ch - is pronounced like "K"

The TEMPLE OF APOLLO DELPHINIUM and the TEMPLE OF OLYMPIAN ZEUS are also in walking distance.

In this Area are the NUMANISMATIC MUSEUM (for coin lovers) and the BENAKI MUSEUM, which guides you to the history and culture of Greece. Nearby is the beautiful NATIONAL GARDEN, with some hidden statues and a restaurant.

Watch the GUARDS CHANGE in front of the HELLENIC PARLIAMENT. The whole routine is one long act of balance and kinda reminded me of a slow motion moon-walk; they move their feet slowly, bringing the leg straight up, above belly button height and setting it behind the other foot. I always wonder how long they’re practice for the positions as such guard must be.

Metro Station: Syntagma Square

Time: Every Sunday Morning, 11:00 AM

GOOD TO KNOW

The Metro from the Airport to Athens City Center costs 10 Euros one way. There is a 3-day Tourist Pass for 20 Euros, which I highly recommend if you plan to get around by Public Transport.

TRIPS

DEPLHI – you can head there from Athens in the morning and catch the last bus back or include it in your trip to Meteora.

  • How to get to Delphi by bus: take the 7:30 bus from Bus Station Terminal B, LIOSSION. The Bus KTEL or Pullman, rides a couple times a day to AMFISSA, this one stops in DELPHI as well. It’s about 10 Euros per person. You can buy tickets at the station or online. It’s a little challenging to find where the bus is departing, so calculate enough time. It departs close to the Train Station and also the Metro Station, but the terminal is hidden in a quarter, reached by walking on small streets. Closest to the Bus Terminal is the Metro Station AGION NIKOLAOS of Line 1. Get off and follow the train rails on the west side towards north and straight towards the station. This way takes around 5 – 10 minutes.

METEORA

  • I really recommend you to stay at least 2 days in Meteora, because it is so magical! On the way back, you can stop at Delphi before arriving in Athens. This route can be done by train from and to Athens.
